God's Promise

Ken Silva

Scripture

Genesis 9

11“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: …16Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

Observation

A covenant is a contract or agreement between two or more parties. The Old and New Testaments are really Old and New Covenants. The word, "testament," is Latin for Covenant. Since a Covenant is an agreement, it is a promise made by God. Because we can rely on God's word for eternity, we can take great comfort in His covenant promising us eternal life in His Son. This covenant was God’s promise to Noah to never again destroy the world with a flood. God gave the rainbow as a sign.

Application

I was sitting on my surfboard outside of Waikiki on Monday morning. It was such a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the water was smooth. Up in the valleys there were light showers and a number of rainbows were visible. At that moment I began to praise God for everything he has done and his promise of the things to come. Just as with the covenant promise the Lord made to Noah, he has a covenant promise for each of us. 2 Chron. 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. As this year begins my heart is to take a posture of humility and seek the Lord with all my heart, mind and strength.

Prayer

Dear Lord thank you for who you are, and the unconditional love you have for me. As this year begins I strive to know you in a deeper more personal way. Help me to walk in the path you've set before me never straying to the left or the right. Amen.
