So you wanna be a Levite?

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the people of Israel, to do the service for the people of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement for the people of Israel, that there may be no plague among the people of Israel when the people of Israel come near the sanctuary.” Numbers 8:19

Observation

V5-22 describes the Lord’s commands to Aaron and Moses for the Levites. The Levites were caretakers of the Tabernacle - every part of it. Set up, break down, maintenance. Not to underscore the holiness required - this was more than a ministry description or assignment. This had to literally do with God Himself, HIs presence - HIs manifestation, involvement and relationship with HIs people!

The Levites were seriously chosen and very high expectations were placed on them as servants of God and His people. Meditating on v5-22, gives me chicken skin - the scary, fear of the Lord, God is HOLY...kine chicken skin!!

Application

I love that New Hope refers to our Levites as the ones who care for the tabernacle of God. It is a ministry of task, yet I’m reminded of the holiness of this task and it’s ministry. The implications of my role as a Levite is serious. I’m not merely setting up and following through the requirements of the church to have church. There are details of order, aesthetics of every detail - inside to outside, gravel lot to paintball lot to ‘Ohana tent to Lead Center to offices, to lighting to materials, brochures to bathrooms, to... to... to.... WOW, it’s quite a feat to be a Levite at New Hope!

Are we all Levites? I say yes... in a practical, relevant and application sense. You sure you wanna be a Levite?

In our case at New Hope - we are all Levites. We have no choice - we are all Levites who wear the heart of servants, ministers and royal priests of God!

So now what? How do we act? live this out? Am I - are we as staff, leaders volunteers fully aware of this most Holy Calling? Oh God!! Help me!!! I’m starting to shake, writing ....

excuse me.... I’m having a God moment...

Prayer

Oh most Holy God.....!!!
